A Short Course in Forgotten Chemistry

To James Elkins

This is life. In a pocket. The one just above my head. Orpimine and jewel-toned, translucent like a skin, illuminating the deeper life just behind its thinning curtain.

This is the way we live. On our words, strung out on a line, propelling each word building upon the last, creating a momentum of alliteration,  guided perfectly by their awakening awareness.

We apprentice ourselves, we light our own fires and by our words discover a beautiful and boundless place of deterministic self-creation.

"It is difficult to get news from poems, yet men die miserably every day for lack of what is found there." - William Carlos Williams.

We Weavers

To Sarah K.

The manuscripts we weave and wear, the ones we write and rewrite, then read out loud for others to hear. They conceal within them everything that we believe we are to be. The whole process is natural to our human mind, continually gathering evidence of its own authenticity and assembling a garment of the self. A beautiful cloth that when examined skillfully shows the life we have led. Each thread its own color texture and length. Threads in their endlessly dyed hues who ask to be teased out and seen under new light then tangled back together in an entirely new way. Revealing altogether different stories, possibilities, and shapes.

All this can be done with sensable utility in mind, but do not feel tied to a final statement. You can create with an improvisational process, seeing other lives and the garments they wear as meer suggestions to study or disregard.

Ideas and experiences are limitless and are only precious when gathered and then spun into the thing that we are.

"Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string" - Emerson
Goethe’s symmetric colour wheel (1809). Goethe believed it was a created response of the human mind.

Human Generation

We are makers, unceasing generators, tirelessly creating the ideas and stories that give our lives purpose. And we come from tens of thousands of generations of makers and storytellers, who sought themselves through their ideas and whose storied myths we walk today. This powerful, ancient and human process generates our move forward and leaves the path cut deeper for those seekers behind us to follow.

Spacial Awareness

Words can unlock a sudden new awareness of the space around us. This awakening will immediately create a real sense of position that inspires our desire for exploration to take over. No longer burdened by the worrisome mind we sping into life; overcome with all the possibilities our previously sleeping potential now revels in this same adventure.

When the current pulls, and if we allow it, we will be swept away, propelled by the surprise of our own unfolding.

"I would love to live like a river flows, carried by the surprise of its own unfolding." - John O'Donohue
